Tournament Rules Concise

1. Good sportsmanship is the cardinal rule of dodgeball. This means no arguing with refs, no pointing/shouting at opposing players. Mama says, “No Douchery!”

2. On the opening rush, your team runs for the balls on the right, and you must clear the balls behind the attack line before you can throw them.

3. A player is out if any body part touches the opponent’s side of the court, except on the opening rush. Reaching over the line to grab a ball is permitted.

4. A thrown ball is live until it hits the ground, wall, ceiling, net, your own teammate, an opponent’s head directly, or another airborne ball.

5. Deflections are live balls that can hit another player or be caught. Deflections result from a thrown ball hitting an opponent or an opponent’s ball.

6. A headshot is not a deflection, it is a dead ball.

7. If a player has 3 points on the ground, a headshot will result in an out. For example, two feet and one knee, sitting down, etc.

8. A player will be called out if they dodge out of bounds.

9. A player can go out of bounds through the back of the court to retrieve a ball, provided they do not have a ball in their possession.

10. Players out of bounds cannot interfere with balls in bounds.

11. A player is out if they drop their ball at any time after blocking a live ball, until that live ball is a dead ball. The live ball may still be caught for an out by another player, but the blocking player is still out.

12. Only team captains shall talk to the refs during gameplay.

13. Pinching is not allowed in Stay Puft divisions. Pinching is defined as manipulating the ball so that rubber touches rubber. This includes folding, and pinching while blocking.

14. Prelim matches will be timed matches with running tally of games won and lost (not matches) used to determine seeding for knock out round.

15. All teams will advance to the knockout round.

16. 2 minute overtime shall occur in the event of a tie in the knockout round.

Standard WDS rules with the following acceptions:

  • 5 balls will be in play. (all WDS No-sting rubber balls)
  • Friday Events = NO blocking when 2 or less players per side remain.
