Many of the Rec Centers we are fortunate enough to call home are in danger of being closed and employees are facing layoffs due to proposed budget cuts.  Please help:

Please go to this site and find out what City Council member your league is associated with and do your part.

Below is something we whipped up - change as you like.  Just a rough draft.

Dear Honorable Council Member XYZ:

I wanted to address my concern at the proposed budget cuts to the Parks and Recs Department.  Being a district member that not only enjoys my local parks and gyms, I also provide much  needed revenue to these facilities by engaging in a number of activities they provide to the community.

I implore you to vote AGAINST the closure of ANY of our City Parks/Recreation Centers.  The amount of people and issues affected by any closures is unlimited (teachers, parents, employees, communities, public safety, union members, myself and most especially the young kids - to name just a few).

Please do not take this matter lightly, you are voting on your district members personal enjoyment; I trust you as my representative to make the right decision for me and my community and vote AGAINST any Park/Rec closures.

I thank you for your time,

NEWS from a Councilman:

According to Councilman Tom LaBonge's office the official ruling on our concern is March 9th.  That is when each Council member - from all districts - will make their recommendations based on the proposed agenda.  We need to get each council member AGAINST the idea  so the vote to close parks can't go through.  The only way is to have people send their outrage, VIA email or calls.

This really is important.  You have no idea what 1,000 email and calls can do.  They say for every 1 email/call sent in, it represents 1000 people who agree but don't air their distaste.  Provide your peeps with the email address/phone number of your league's council member.  Make it easy for them to step up - and get these emails sent!

SO - Per LaBonge's (Hollywood district) office, he is completely against the  idea of shutting down parks - and will recommend none - but is still afraid due to the budget, some facilities will be closed.

On their suggestion:

1) find out who is the council member in your district (or the district your gym is in)

www.lacity.org/YourGovernment/CityCouncil/index.htm

2) EMAIL your council member ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

3)  In your email state:

- you are A DISTRICT MEMBER (remember they only care if you are in their district) that services ALL age groups within their district and that you are OUTRAGED at the proposed cuts to Park & Recs.  Make sure to mention how your league services the community, distrcit and a RANGE citizens - young, old, low income or not -  and that closing ANY parks would be a larger strain on the City's budget. - the use of the word 'implore' is always a good way to say youre begging.
